Beyond the spacecraft! A journey through NASA's Earth observation missions

High-Level Project Summary

An experience based on the learning methodology includes interaction through an experience with Laika, who will guide you first through the planet earth in real-time, then a map of the missions, and finally to meet a great timeline. Open to everyone, from little kids to undergraduate students and even beyond! This project aims to empower and leave curiosity in the hearts of the participants!

Detailed Project Description

This project is based on an experience with the first dog that orbited the planet. Mainly this game is designed for people interested in the history of NASA's Earth Observing Missions, it is a quick trip but with a lot of interaction and learning hand in hand with tools like Notion, Padlet, and Google Earth.

In this experience, participants will be able to start exploring the planet Earth first through a panoramic view and in real-time, where they will be able to interact with the "I'm feeling lucky" tool to find and search for possible locations where missions have been launched. Providing two examples of such places.

The next tool is a map with the launched missions so that participants can include the missions that they found missing and add more, the goal is that with the interactions the map is completely filled thanks to joint work!

Later you can find the timeline so that participants can locate the date and learn about the same missions but in a new and fun format. And also, open to collaboration!

This project is based on a learning-based model, encouraging the interaction of the participants in order to encourage them to investigate and leave their mark on the map and timeline along with the missions they want to add. With this project I hope to provide participants and especially children and young people to be interested in learning about any of the missions, whether they have failed, completed, canceled, or if they are still going! I want to leave the participants curious so they don't stop learning, NASA is working and will continue to launch these missions to keep learning!

Beyond the spacecraft, is much more than a project for me so that everyone who participates can get some important information from a short game but with lots of interaction and information!

Space Agency Data

I used the resources provided on the challenge page (Nimbus to Now: The History of NASA’s Earth-Observing Missions) and included information about NASA, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and European Space Agency.

Hackathon Journey

It was very intense work but at the same time very satisfying to know that with every minute and hour I was learning and at the same time giving a solution to the challenge I chose.

Before starting this journey I wanted to challenge myself to participate alone! I did this challenge in order to develop new skills such as working under pressure, productivity, discipline, and the ability to prioritize important tasks (at the beginning I had +20 tabs open, I wanted to do everything at once!)

Now I feel quite reassured to have completed my first challenge successfully and I would like to mention that I learned a lot about how earth observation missions work and that there is always something new to discover!

How did I decide to take this challenge? reading the description of this challenge really caught my attention and an idea came to my mind on how to approach this challenge which is the final product.

Finally, I would like to thank my mom that even though she saw me sitting in front of the laptop for hours she understood that it was very important for me to complete this project, thanks mom.

And also to the NASA Spaces App Challenge team for making this happen, you can't imagine how grateful I am for this opportunity! Once again, thank you!

See you soon!

Greeting from Peru
