Earth Mission

High-Level Project Summary

NASA's Earth-observing missions have great impact on understanding our planet. It is our duty to spread this knowledge to humans everywhere and preserve NASA's history. With great passion and excitement, we went for creating an all-age educational tool to raise awareness about the great role for NASA's missions in contributing to our lives in the past, present and future.Using our diverse skills and experience, we created a user-friendly webpage to display an interactive timeline for NASA's missions, which include missions from various categories, such as climate, oceans, land and vegetation, and wildfires. Our solution is maintainable and can be updated to include new Earth missions.

Detailed Project Description

 Project Description:

Our solution presents an interactive timeline that displays media (images & videos) related to NASA's Earth observing missions. It can be used as an educational tool, which is suitable for all age-groups, for the sake of raising awareness about Earth observations which is directly correlated to almost all aspects of our life.

Tools, coding languages and software:

For chat, we used Discord channels.

For team collaboration, we had meetings over Zoom and over Discord voice channels. We have also created a project workspace in Trello to organize our work (TODOs, Work in Progress, and Done tasks).

For data collection, we tested using APIs to gather data, but it was not easy to find a single API that can serve as a single data provider. We have finally chosen to extract data manually for more accurate results.

For the design, we used Figma.

For the webpage, we created a React project (based on HTML, CSS and JavaScript). Our webpage is deployed on GitHub.

Future Work:

  • Integrate our story book design to the webpage.
  • Adopt accessibility features such as color contrast, audio and visual aids.
  • Add more interactive features such as matching games and quizzes.
  • Add additional mission data to be displayed, such as the spatial scales of the observations and length of time required by the mission to map the whole globe, as well as hyperlinks to NASA pages which include more data about the mission.
  • Create an API to facilitate the access of all Earth-Observing missions in an attempt to preserve NASA’s history.

Hackathon Journey

It was an exceptional journey, in which we got the chance to meet & collaborate with team-mates from different continents on Earth! We had fun!

Sometimes, it was difficult connecting to each other, due to different time-zones. Until the last minute, we were striving to get our work done and integrated as a one-single project.
