#Earth Spy - Know the Satellites Better

High-Level Project Summary

NASA and its partners manage many satellites. The data is too technical for a normal person or a student to understand. We designed a solution with an easy to understand web app. It displays the data, which can easily understood by the common public and helps them know more about the Earth’s Observing missions in an easy and fun way.

Detailed Project Description

Challenge: NIMBUS TO NOW: THE HISTORY OF NASA’S EARTH-OBSERVING MISSIONS

NASA and other international space partners build and deploy many space missions for observing the Earth's atmosphere, land, weather, water, ice etc. All the information is collected and stored in database. So much of the data was made available to public to know about how these missions works and what they do. But the data is more scientific, a common people or student finds difficult to absorb the information.

Solution: Interactive Web App with easy to understand information

We have checked the NASA and other international space partners data. We come up with a database design to collect the data and reformat the data to display in the Web App to be able to easily digest the information to the end users.

High Level Design

Data Flow Design

Web App Site Map Design

The scope of the project is to provide the high level designs and a prototype demo. With available (limited) time, we have implemented the High Level Design, Data Flow Design, Web App Sitemap as shown in the above diagrams. A demo of the prototype project is shown in the below video.

Future:

This project can be extended to be able to develop with a detailed design and fully working App. Due to the time limit, we have used text in the Demo App. This can be extended to graphical by adding the relevant images and 3d graphics.

  • Could add further info on what the satellite did and what data it collected
  • Adding more information on each topic
  • Have more pictures with more fun interactive flows

Hackathon Journey

My name is Ritkriti and I’m 13 years old with an interest in Space Science. This is my 3rd NASA space apps challenge along with my dad, Ramesh.

In 2020 our submission (#E2ISS), was awarded with “Global Nominee”.

In 2021 our submission (10 Steps To Mars), was awarded with the “Local People Choice”.

This year I chose “Nimbus To Now: The History Of NASA’s Earth-Observing Missions” challenge. The solution provides a fun and interactive Web App to explore the information about the Earth Observing Missions.

Thank you to NASA Space Apps Challenge team for giving us the opportunity to participate in this Space Apps Challenge.
