The Nearest Star

High-Level Project Summary

Our team undertook to develop a comic-based project, illustrating through a character (Parker) and his spaceship (Solar Probe), telling about his incredible journey with challenges to be faced in space, until reaching his goal of ''touching the sun'' . Through extensive research into the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft and its path to the sun, we choose this creative and fun illustration art solution to reach and teach young audiences about these space happenings.

Detailed Project Description

Our project aims to improve and reach the knowledge of the young audience about the recent space mission on the way to the sun, hence the choice to transmit through an illustrative comic divided into 4 chapters, telling the journey of Parker (character), and how he faced the challenges until he reached his goals.

The development of the project until its final arc went through stages in which the first one was obtained by a combination of information regarding the mission of the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft, telling how the solar system works and space events that the machine has suffered. Understanding the entire process that NASA went through for 60 years to finally reach the sun was a real challenge. But from that point, we understand how to retell that story to the audience.

We set up the story in which the first and second chapters was focused on how Parker, a vacuum cleaner, wanted to touch the sun and, to reach his dream, faced a selection process from NASA. In which, he went through arduous training, to finally be selected for the mission along with his Solar Probe spacecraft. From that point, he understands the true meaning of the journey and how important it needs to be to succeed.

The final arc, in chapters 3 and 4, the focus of the journey was on the challenges of space. After carrying out Parker's takeoff, where after a long time facing space alone he reaches the critical surface of Alfvén. A great challenge to be faced, due to this boundary being a critical passage between the surface and the solar atmosphere. Thus reaching the corona where he finally "touches the sun" and remains for many years studying and collecting information about the solar system.

Therefore, the objective of this project is to spread knowledge to the public, in an illustrative and fun way to read, thus holding attention and propagating information about the space in which we live.

Space Agency Data

Through extensive research, we used the descriptions and resources provided by NASA about the mission of the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft to understand the trajectory and challenges faced in space. This formed the basis for the development and planning of the comic, that is, the research was fundamental, to understanding all the steps and guiding the team to retell/transmit through an illustrative artistic way.

Hackathon Journey

The hackathon taught the team to organize ideas and go through different and rewarding experiences. The team members were encouraged to develop a project outside their comfort zone, and through the selected challenge, allowed to develop and expand our knowledge and information.

We would like to thank the entire Space Apps Salvador team and the event organizers for allowing us to go through the incredible experience. All our team members like to design a comic, in which we had to research a lot and learn how the solar system and the objective of the “on the way to the sun” space mission.
