First To The Sun

High-Level Project Summary

What did I develop? ->I developed an android app for the challenge "ON THE WAY TO THE SUN". My challenge is to 'develop a way to tell young audiences the inspiring story of Parker’s record-breaking journey from Earth to the Sun and all perils it overcame on the way'. The app act as a documentary about the journey of parker probe.How does it "solve" the challenge? ->There is nothing more educational than visual learning, it provides the fun and gives you a visual effect, so that you can see and know about what you learning about. Why is it important? ->My challenge was to tell stories to young audiences. and what will make listen than pictures and videos to catch their attention

Detailed Project Description

When tackling this challenge the only API I could use "Astronomy Picture of the Day" I had to create my own API (kind of ) to make the app self updating and easily manageable

How does it work?->

The app is a static application with not much going on and apart from the fact that it consumes the API and displays information for the users. It has a bunch of image and video documentation.

Just slide down when watching a video to load another.

What benefits does it have? ->

As I said earlier the app act as a fun way to learn. This is very good because the image and video documentation that the app provides can be updated with out updating the app.

What do you hope to achieve? ->

Many people learn at different pace and ways. This app provides a summary of what is going on in the images or videos, so that you know what is going on.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, or software did you use to develop your project? ->

The coding language I used was "KOTLIN"

The software I used was "ANDROID STUDIO"

My code is hosted on github "https://github.com/Ohior/to_the_sun_NASA"

Space Agency Data

By using the NASA API that provides the Astronomy Picture of the Day I was able to get the picture of the day along with its content description. I also got huge help from this NASA site (https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/Gallery/ParkerSolarProbe.html#section6-id).

This was where I got all my images, videos, summary which I used to populate and create my API.

Hackathon Journey

This space app was both challenging and exciting. Will I do it again? Well if I am available and have the chance, I definitely will

What did you learn? ->

One thing I learnt was that I did not have to create an account or generate an API key to use most of NASA APIs. Funnily I already have and generated a key.

It also made me hone my skills on mobile application development.

I also discovered that NASA sent names to the sun, 'I did not know that prior this challenge'.

 What inspired your team to choose this challenge? ->

The sun has always amazed me, Like how can something so hot survive the coldness of space. The heat is not just in the sun's core, but spreads to hundreds of millions of miles outside the sun's atmosphere.

What was your approach to developing this project? ->

My approach was to make something that was easily accessible, easy to navigate. and fun to use. Who do not like documentary

How did your team resolve setbacks and challenges? ->

So many research was done to produce and complete this challenge. This lead to the project to be destroyed and remade up to 3 times.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank and why? ->

It is not a person per se, but I will like to thank NASA for this opportunity. and my whatsapp group. They have been very helpful in helping me complete my challenge.

This page was also very help, without it I won't have achieve much of what I did. It contains the image and videos I used in this challenge. https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/Gallery/ParkerSolarProbe.html#section6-id

This is the link to the complete app APK https://github.com/Ohior/to_the_sun_NASA/blob/main/APK/FirstToTheSun.apk . It should only be installed on android devices
