EO Labs

High-Level Project Summary

To respond to the need for proper training and knowledge of policymakers, as well as a way to exchange data among Earth Observation agencies, our team developed a platform where information is exchanged. Our recent coding skills were put to use during those 20 plus hours of challenge to create an application that is simple to use and provides a multitude of training opportunities. Additionally, EO Labs allows agencies to constantly send data, ensuring that the best resources are available in one place for those who need it and for those who share it. By making relevant economic and environmental data available, we hope to capture the change this world needs.

Detailed Project Description

EO Labs is intended to be a one-stop page for those who are interested in Earth Observations data that can make a difference in our world. From policymakers to engaged civilians, our platform stands as a source of knowledge empowering those who want to make a difference in the world.

This project was created using a database populated from resources provided by the organization of NASA Space Apps Challenge: the NASA ARSET full catalog of trainings in spreadsheet format with all the relevant data. Once integrated with a React App, our platform was available for users to filter and get all the learning opportunities offered by ARSET. Additionally, we've created a fill form so organizations can populate our database and make known their data - which can be filtered by title and theme.

The benefits are making relevant information available, connecting the data and training opportunities to those who my benefit from it, building a mutual trustworthy platform, and simplifying an exchange of data that ultimately benefits the global community.

We used Kintone for our databse, React and Express.js for the frontend and server, and Bootstrap for styling.

Space Agency Data

We used NASA Arset (Applied Remote Sensing Training Program) as our source of learning opportunities for the relevance, variety, and impact of the compilation of courses they offer. It's a well-known, respected section of Nasa's Earth Science Applied Science that aims to use data to work for a better world. To realize that so many incredible learning opportunities are available just amazes us, and that's what encouraged - and humbled - us to use Arset as our primary source on EO Labs.

Hackathon Journey

This hackathon was one of the most rewarding experiences we ever had! At first, we were honored, humbled, and excited to be a part of this marathon of coding with purpose. Once the journey begun, we pushed ourselves to understand fully our challenge, to brainstorm ideas, and to come up with a plan of action to build step by step an app that would be relevant to people's lives.

There were moments where, as entry-level software engineers, our own knowledge and technical skills were challenged. But with a string sense of purpose, determination, and collaboration, we were able to overcome each blocker, as we improved our coding skills, and became closer to our MVP.

At the end, we realized it's not about the competition of teams, but instead it's about our competition with ourselves to create and develop an app that addresses a need and culminates in benefits for the global community. To fulfill this purpose as we set ourselves to, unveiling new technologies, and delivering a solution through our coding is just the best prize of all.
