Project: Cosmic Capture, A Result of CRISPR-Cas9 and Genetic Engineering

High-Level Project Summary

We have designed a website that allows users to learn about environmental space travel stress and understand how other living things struggle with these hassle. We used the specialty of living things from different realms to the maximum using CRISPR-Cas9 and bioengineering. We presented the features of our superhero in website with gamification and meanwhile we offer to user find examples of how to choose a living thing characteristics and how it can combine that features with scientific steps. Creatures that endure hardships are important because with these researches, we gain information about our existence and develop scientific research while understanding the basis of our entity.

Detailed Project Description

What exactly does it do?

Many people, from their childhood, have not been able to stop thinking about how fascinating it is to go out into space and wander among the stars? Establishing permanent human colonies on different travelers in space and conducting scientific research sounds great, but the outer space and the planets we want to explore do not provide the factors that will support our life. This is a big problem that makes it difficult to make manned flights into space and we need to solve it.

Although humans do not have an anatomy suitable for living in space, many studies have proven that we can design them for these missions, which other living things can do. In this challenge, we designed it to be used in space studies to other planets in the future, in creating the Martian atmosphere and teraforming the planet, and especially in making the lunar surface habitable after the Artemis Mission, which is now implemented. His name is Cosmic Capture.

Cosmic Capture will ensure that human space studies are carried out faster than manned space studies, with minimum requirements in spacecraft, and will ensure that studies are carried out at less cost. This will be the biggest scientific advance humans have ever made in fitting extraterrestrial planets into their own bodies.

Our website offers informative content that enables users to learn about the challenges of spaceflight and which plants can handle these harsh conditions. We designed our superhero to be able to overcome these difficulties. We used CRISPR-Cas9 and bioengineering methods while designing it. On our website, we have presented the anatomical features of our hero in detail to the users.

We have developed a website which allows the user to explore space travel stresses and it explains to the user how the diverse organisms deal with these stresses and on top of that, we have developed a game which allows the user to experience extreme gravity, disrupted sleep and circadian rhythms as you have to continuously dodge rocks.

How does it work?

So basically, we have created 3 projects including a game, a website and a virtual drawing of our space biology hero. The game is pretty simple as you just have to dodge rocks and not get too close to the edges or you lose in the game, as for the website, we have displayed information, as well as our projects so that anyone can view them.

The images below, you can learn about how our website looks and the general purpose of the pages.

This is the introduction to our site, general information about the challenges of space travel.

The superhero we designed here has anatomical information. On the left are images that allow you to imagine a visualized version of the anatomical parts of Cosmic Capture.

When you go down to the bottom of the main page, you will encounter a game. In this game, users will try to take the superhero we designed to another planet.

The end of page, there are photos of the creatures we used while designing our hero, and flashcards that allow users to get general information. To get more detailed information about these creatures, they need to press the "read more" button.

The "About" page provides information about the purpose of developing our project and the scientific methods we use. At the bottom of the page are photos that allow us to imagine the possible physical appearance of our hero using the free web tool called Dall-e2.

On the "Creature Library" page, there is information that allows users to get detailed information about the creatures we use while designing our own superhero.

"Who Are We?" page contains content that will allow the user to learn about our team members. There is also a song we wrote for the Space App Challenge.

We designed our website via wix.com.

We used scratch while coding our game.

We used the free AI-based website Dall-e2 while designing our images.

We got help from Canva.com while preparing our video and making vector illustrations presenting the anatomical features of our hero.

What benefits does it have?

It makes the user learn about what types of organisms live in space and also makes the user enjoy the experience while learning about the stresses of space travel, the different types of organisms and how they deal with the stresses of space.

What do you hope to achieve?

With our design, it will help humanity to design those planets in a way that supports life in space studies to other planets in the future.

We hope to advance to world-wide judging as we all have our own reasons to why we would like this.

What tools, coding languages, hardware, or software did you use to develop your project?

we used scratch for the creation of our game called space runner, we have used google documents while our work, we have used wix.com and html (programing language) for our website and we have used an A.I generated drawing for our space biology hero. We got help from Canva.com while preparing our video and making vector illustrations presenting the anatomical features of our hero.

Space Agency Data

  • NASA RESOURCES:That datas provided us with an idea about what features our hero should have, and it was the source of the articles we wrote about space travel hazars on our website.
  • CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY (CSA):Helped when reviewing the literature, allows us to learn about space biology studies

Staying clean in a world full of germs is an important part of our daily lives. We regularly wash and bathe-knowing that these rituals help keep us healthy and prevent illness from spreading. But we still host millions of tiny organisms all over our bodies all the time, and they're not all bad either.

These microscopic creatures, called microbes, are constant companions to every part of our Earth. Many microbes play important roles in the delicate balance of different biological environments, or ecosystems. An ecosystem can be a part of a person (like the gastrointestinal tract), the entire body or many people living together. It can be a speck of dirt or an entire planet. Every ecosystem, big or small, creates a new opportunity for microbes to live, die, multiply or change and to impact its fragile environment.

Hackathon Journey

We all had a fun time making our project, even though we were stressed at some point while making our project, we still were able to have fun and we were also able to learn a few things. We decided to choose this challenge as we it aligned with our interests and our professions. We were all really anxious and regretful approaching the challenge as we weren't too confident about winning but that changed later on through bonding with each other. We resolved setbacks and challenges by researching our way through the challenges and we helped each other by lending a hand to everyone to avoid setbacks. We would like to thank the local lead of Antalya(Selman Canlı), Turkey for helping us with a few questions and a few troubles we had as he/she gave us great solutions for our questions.

Our team members met each other via Discord. Since our team members are from different countries, we sometimes had communication problems, but in the end we managed to upload our project successfully.
