Survivors

High-Level Project Summary

We from Celestiais team have developed a fun way to teach the subject of astronomy, space travel and astrobiology to young people, in which we apply this knowledge in a card game in which we will teach our audience about these subjects in a playful way. The game consists of merging with organisms that already exist on our planet to survive the proposed challenges. As a way to delve deeper into the beings illustrated in the cards, we inserted a QR code in each one that directs them to our website, where there is a deepening of the illustrated card. In addition to card features, we'll show you the space superhero, where we've gathered genes from all available realms to shape him.

Detailed Project Description

What is "Survivors" ?

Survivors is a card game made for all ages, where astronomy and astrobiology are taught in a playful way. This game can be started with 2 to 4 people, and whoever has accumulated the most points will win.

How to play:

The game starts with the “Human” organism card being dealt to each player, as it is mandatory to make a move. After that, separate the cards into 2 decks: a Challenge deck and an Organism deck. Shuffle the two decks and deal 3 organism cards to each player and with that the player have to choose two of the three cards to "merge" with the human played.

Once your being is created on the table, you have to get challenges cards to be overcome in the challenge deck. The first person to play will take a challenge card to overcome it and if the player has the necessary conditions to survive, he will keep the challenge and getting organisms card, ending the turn if he doesn't have it. If the necessary conditions of survival doesn't match, he will lose the card that has less resistance to the challenge, will have to replace it (if he has any organism card in his hand), and will pass the challenge card to the next player (the challenge card will return to the deck if no one can beat it). In the end, whoever accumulates the most challenge points wins.

QR code

Each card in the game will have a QR Code that will direct the player to a reserved page on our website, where he will have all the detailed information about the card (card of organisms or challenges), and curiosities.

Our website is a way for the player to delve into the subject, as there will be all the information available about organisms, challenges and also about our space super hero.

Website

Our website was developed in Javascript with the support of the React Framework, and serves to expand knowledge about the game's cards.

Space Agency Data

To understand the effects of space on the human body, we took data from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) website, and to form our superhero and cards, we took data from an article on NASA's extremophiles.

Hackathon Journey

A great experience that brought us to a whole new environment, where we explore and discover new horizons of high level developments, ensuring our entertainment while helping to improve aspects of our planet. The general learning was how we managed to start and manage projects from scratch, where we were the main supporting and responsible for making everything go according to our expectations, and of course, with the help of our mentors who were excellent in helping us with our questions during the progress of the project. The choice of this challenge was unanimous, where we thought about how interesting it would be if we really had a superhero that could withstand the extreme conditions that are found in space and on Earth, in addition to understanding how it would help in our evolution as a society. The team's homogeneous work meant that small problems were resolved right away, without wasting a lot of development time. Our thanks go to our university for providing us with all this first experience with something like this, since we are eternal freshmen in life, where we are always learning something new. We also thank our professors for giving us all the necessary encouragement so that we could join this incredible adventure, especially our professor Caio Eduardo who has always been present since the beginning of our training and academic development.
