High-Level Project Summary

We developed a platform which is used to educate users on the challenges of space flight. Our platform includes information about how different organisms find ways to adapt in microgravity. Initially, users have the chance to educate themselves on the adaptations of organism of their choice. Once users have had the chance to read through all the data, they then process to begin the game whereby they must choose 5 out of 10 features in order to create their desired space superhero. If users manage to select the correct features, which will allow their superhero to survive in space, then they are considered winners, if not, then their superhero will will end up as a villain.

Detailed Project Description

We searched the physical and psychological effects of space on humans such as, radiation, hyper-gravity and microgravity. Also we explored how to help astronauts avoid these hazards and cure diseases. In addition to this, we explored how organisms, such as rodents increase their levels of myostatin while is space, allowing scientists to produce a muscle growth inducing drug. Furthermore, we also looked at how Arabidopsis plants grow in space. After that, we put all these information in the game which allow players to choose 5 features out of 10, and there are 7 correct options 3 wrong options. At the end, it will show whether players choose the correct ones or not. From this process, they will learn about adaptations and extra information, such as biological experiments.

Space Agency Data

For our project, we used the European space Agency to learn about tardigrades, which are small micro-animals that live in temporary ponds and droplets of water in soil and are known to have the ability to survive under extreme conditions, which most organisms would not be able to do.

Hackathon Journey

Taking part in this years space apps challenge was definitely a wonderful way to come together as a group and research about a topic we are all extremely excited about. We initially chose this topic because the idea of exploring how different organism can come to life and survive in outer space, where conditions are very different to those on Earth, is something we find incredibly fascinating. As a group, we are inspired by the idea that humans could potentially find ways to survive in space and we think that research in this area is extremely important as it could create a better future not only for humanity but also relieve some of the pressures imposed on Earth from overpopulation and industrial activity. Furthermore, it was also a learning experience as we had to learn how to create a new program from scratch and how to design our program in order to present our research in a fun and engaging manner. Finally, although we were successful in being able to work well as a group, help each other and share ideas, we also experienced some challenges, such as the designing of our program.
