BUILD A SPACE BIOLOGY SUPERHERO

High-Level Project Summary

As we well know, exploring space brings many challenges, some of them are: extreme gravity, sleep disturbance, limited supplies, not having access to medical care, among others. We as team have designed a web page that allows all users to explore the tensions of space travel, understand a little more about the challenges that human beings experience when being on a space travel, as well as exploring how the various organisms that have been sent into space behave and adapt, because understanding how basic biology works in space is critical to helping astronauts adapt and thrive during missions long lasting.

Detailed Project Description

Digital platform

Space Biology is an exploration space that takes us far beyond the stars, it's a website which was designed by members of NASA's International Space Apps Challenge 2022.

In this plataform you can find the space challenges faced by the different organism, such as stress, disrupted sleep, poor health care, extreme gravity, circadian rhythms, and limited supplies, etc.

  • Website sections:
  1.  in "start" you can find the description of our project "Space Biology Mx"
  2. In the "meet the team" section you can learn about our history and a short video of us
  3. In the "discover" section you will be able to explore the tensions of the various organisms in space travel, from humans to bacteria and fungi.
  4. In the "contact" section you will find our YouTube channel and some social networks with which you can ask us questions and contact us.
  5. And finally in the "space robot" section is our creation "Laikanauta", the superhero that will help combat the adverse effects of space travel.
  • How to start exploring the various organisms? In the upper bar search for discover and click there, you will have several buttons that will indicate the organizations available to know.

Laika nauta

In addition to the website, our project consists of the creation of a robot, in honor of "laika", the first human being put into orbit with the help of the Soviets. This canine was one of the superheroes of the space age, just as they are part of the ecosystem. The "MX Space Biology" project is based on a robot with a 3D model of a canine, whose function consists of a system to maintain a culture of bacteria and fungi, with the aim of surviving in the milky way, despite the fact that now this robot is just a prototype we want to take it further... through an algorithm for its operation.

Space Agency Data

To describe the adverse effects that human astronauts go through in space travel we made use of NASA's humanresearchroadmap data, which provided us with information on radiation, celestial dust and various negative effects on astronauts' health such as sleep disturbance and extreme gravity.

In addition, we also did an extensive exploration of the studies that have been carried out on different organisms to understand their adaptation on the NASA's GelelabRepo website, and as our project was developed by members with Mexican residency we used data from the Mexican Space Agency.

Hackathon Journey

The choice of our project arises from the curiosity to learn beyond what the earth's atmosphere allows us.

Now it is part of each one of us and the interest in continuing to learn more about the subject is what makes it a job that unites us as a team and evokes in each one of us a sense of belonging in which we can work on what we we love and consider important.

The same interest has united us, it is the love for science and space that has led us to develop and share knowledge, experiences, challenges and adventures. We are a varied team in terms of ages, interests, abilities and places of residence, but we are united by the same passion and each one with their abilities we long to open our horizons and be able to explain our project and what for us is a dream, together they become in reality.

Our story at Space Apps started with Alexa, as she saw advertising on Facebook and later Fabiola, Enya and Carlos joined us. Once inside, they met Abigail and Estefanía, two girls who would bring knowledge and skills different from those already possessed by the other members of the team. We were aware that this would be a project that would connect us with other people who felt a very strong connection with science, but it would also be an opportunity to learn about scientific and cultural issues in our states.

Some of the challenges that we presented was that each one brought different ideas, for which it was difficult for us to reach an agreement, another problem was due to the schedules of each one, it was difficult for us to comply, but we all knew the commitment and responsibility that we had, Thanks to that we were able to move forward. Undoubtedly a great experience for everyone, a great way to unite ideas, people, cultures for the same goal. We are very happy to be part of this great event.
