Mission Control We Have a Problem!

High-Level Project Summary

Mission Control We Have A Problem! is a board game designed to capture the many challenges encountered in space travel. The initial focus is on environmental stresses on the astronauts to include; Distance from Earth, Isolation & Confinement, Gravity, Hostile and Closed Environment, & Radiation. These challenges are captured using Event Cards that impact all players and Hazard cards that impact individual players.

Detailed Project Description

The board game using cards and space travel to show the environmental challenges and stress that are involved in space travel. We use research cards to introduce super powers that are astronauts use to counter the hazards in space.

We used Inkscape, Google Drive & Canva.

Space Agency Data

The biggest help was the risks articles under the resource tab. Selecting on providing many linking articles and suddenly two hours go by as you are writing about the risks of decrompression via the Risk of Decompression Sickness [inactive] article, while researching various animals that may help provide a solution to the problem.

Hackathon Journey

Absolutely wonderful! We learned so much about the real world environmental stresses of space travel entails and the many ways that organisms on earth protect or mitigate these various challenges.

We chose this challenge for two reasons;

  1. We wanted to learn about the challenges that of a Trip to Mars must overcome.
  2. We wanted to make a physical (analog) product as part of any challenge we picked.

The initial approach was to begin reading and researching the 5 Hazards of Space Travel that was provided in the Resource Tab. Early on we decided to generate a card game so we could a large pool of Hazards and then generate Research to provide super powers to our Astronauts.

The biggest challenge was learning the tools we needed to make the game. For Example, none of us were proficient users of Gimp or Inkscape. Plus what tool to use to generate the video? How do we get the effects we wanted? Overcoming these challenges involved separating the problems for individuals on the team to focus on, such as, Hayden you work on updating the map grid.

I'd love the thank Urban Engine for making the Huntsville Event happen despite a last minute setback.

Immensely useful as I studied on the various research and Gaps that NASA provided.
