Biology Superhero Mission

High-Level Project Summary

In space exploration mission, astronauts face numerous challenges including extreme environmental stresses and spaceflight hazards that not only affect the physical and psychological health of the astronauts but also the progress and outcome of the mission. Hence, we created the "Biology Superhero Mission", a game to build a space biology superhero that can cope with the extreme environment in space. Our project aims to expose the players to adaption of diverse organism with environmental stress and also the spaceflight hazards faced by astronauts when carrying out researches and experiments in space. With that, we hope that players will be intrigued by space exploration.

Detailed Project Description

What exactly does it do?

Biology Superhero Mission is a game created for all walks of life in order to expose them to space exploration and act as an entertainment activity during their pastime. Together with this game, we created a website where players can learn about the characteristic of the superhero which allow it to cope with extreme environment in space.


How does it work?

In this game, players will need to accomplish 4 missions in order to build their Space Biology Superhero. In the first mission, players will need to gather raw materials to build the equipment needed for their research. 

The second mission requires players to visit areas with an extreme environment (i.e. extreme temperature, low pressure and high radiation). At this stage, players will study the adaptations of diverse organisms and choose the characteristics for their superhero. 

In the third mission, players will launch off to space. They will need to overcome the spaceflight challenges such as microgravity, radiation, isolation and limitation of food supply while carrying out their mission to build the superhero.

Once the superhero is created, it will be released to space in the fourth mission. Here, players will need to try their best to make sure their superhero survives the space environmental stresses. Once they complete this, the mission is accomplished.


What benefits does it have?

Through this game, players are able to be enlightened about spaceflight challenges, hazards and the extreme environmental stresses that are experienced in space. For example, radiation, low temperature, pressure, so on and so forth. Players will also learn about the different adaption mechanisms of organism when dealing with extreme environment. This game is an entertaining educational tool that bring the player's attention to space exploration and adaptation mechanism needed for an organism to cope with extreme environmental stress in space.


Our aim

Our project aims to expose the players to adaptation of diverse organisms with environmental stress and also the spaceflight hazards faced by astronauts when carrying out research and experiments in space. With that, we hope that young generations will be intrigued by space exploration to generate better ideas for research purposes and hopefully, making deep space exploration possible.

Hackathon Journey

Our Hackathon Journey is definitely a challenging yet memorable one. We started this project with our common interest: to create a biology superhero, which sounds totally cool. After lots of research and brainstorming, we came across multiple challenges to make sure our superhero can cope with the extreme environmental stress in space. After the design in done, we encounter a bigger setback: the game plan. With numerous ideas popping out, we had to screen and analyse if our game plan is suitable and most importantly, practical with the skill we have in hand. These challenges really bring us closer together and we've learnt, not only the hard skills, but also the soft skills that is essential in life.


Hannah Wong:

The Space Apps Challenge is the hardest challenge that I participated in. For me, the space biology superhero challenge is the right choice as we think that creating an organism is quite cool. We did a lot of research and brainstorming to make the organisms logical yet creative. To make sure our plan is on the right track, my teammates and I often meet up physically and virtually. I would like to thank my teammates as they give their full commitment to this challenge.


Houng Hui Ling:

Throughout this time, I have gained different skills as well as meaningful and unforgettable experiences. I would like to thank the organisers, instructors, mentors, my beloved teacher-in-charged and cooperative teammates for their guidance and hard work.


Kathleen Jane:

An exhausting yet meaningful challenge this is, for I have learnt much unforgettable skills that will definitely be used in the future. There’s a ton of people I would like to thank, however, the person who I want to pay gratitude to would definitely be our teacher in charged. Thank you for guiding and giving us different insights. And to my teammates, thank you for being such a fun team to work with. To more adventures together!

I have learnt a lot of skills such as website development and gain much knowledge like spaceflight challenges, characteristics of tardigrade and more. I would like to thank my teammates and our teacher who always helped me when I’m facing problems.
