Planets and Their Sounds

High-Level Project Summary

We recorded a short film that helps people understand the solar system better by showing how different sounds on Earth mimic the ones that the planets of the solar system make. It's important because people don't know what kind of sounds the planets make and we are making this information easy to understand by connecting them to everyday life.

Detailed Project Description

Our challenge was Turning STEM into STEAM. We chose this challenge because generally art gets seperated from science. However we think that they are intertwined. In order to express ourselves properly we decided to record a short film. Our short film shows how sounds from real life mimic the sounds of the planets of the Solar System make. Normally you cannot hear sounds in space so we used the seismic vibrations that were recorded by NASA. It's main purpose is to teach people while adding art into STEM. Our project doesn't discriminate anyone. It's easy to understand, fun to watch, memorable and most importantly very global. Creating a short film is the most universal way of getting your point across. We hope that our project gets the recognition it deserves and reaches loads of people. While making this short film we used a camera, PowerPoint and Adobe Premier Pro.

Space Agency Data

We used the archive NASA allowed us to use. The archive was open from 1st of October to 2nd of October. We used it to get information about the planets of the Solar System. We used the information in a slideshow that we showed in our short film. Having access to this huge archive encouraged us. It gave us hope about this entire competition. We broadened our horizons while looking through this much information. We are super grateful to NASA who gave us this access.

Hackathon Journey

The part that intrigued us the most about this challenge was how different our opinions were from other people. People think that science and art are far from each other. However, we think that they are intertwined. In order to express ourselves in the most universal way we created this short film. How did we get our ideas? At first we thought that the black hole sounded like an ancient instrument. After that we had many other ideas and different thoughts like using atoms to describe the planets and create songs from the planets' sounds. After a while we decided that explaining science with art by making a short film was the most universal way. Creating this short film also taught us how different the planets sounded like. We are grateful that we chose this project because while we were trying to help others we expanded the horizon that is our brains. During our Hackathon journey we faced a difficulty. We didn't know that the competition was a two step process. At first we had to go through a team of Turkish juries that didn't know English. Our project was created in English. In order to solve this issue we added Turkish subtitles to our short film.
