The Scottish Eagle

The Bigger Picture

High-Level Project Summary

Through this poem, my aspiration was to provide an art piece that would provide new discoveries to the overall public while still providing perspective of what is left to discover. By providing new information regarding the discovery of water molecules on the moon and ice on mars. While I eluded to alternative life, my intention was to create a realization within the reader that there are greater processes at play than simply those that occur on our planet of Earth. That there is a patterned reason for the existence of elements and planetoids in the universe as a whole and that everything is interconnected from a common beginning.

Detailed Project Description

The purpose of this poem is to provide a scientific understanding of our universe while maintaining the creative idea of what else could be out there. While science may have an explanation for most of the events that occur throughout our lives, that can make a mundane existence for some of the more artistic individuals. By harboring a wonder for the unknown by showing how vast it is can create a new surge of interest in space exploration within the next generation.

Space Agency Data

A few details I used are from a recent confirmation form a previously on-going project with NASA under the name Clementine from 1998. While the final confirmation was provided by the Moon Mineralogy Mapper, or more shortly, M3. This new knowledge to me that was shared by SOFIA pilot "Spike" Tellier shed new light on my understanding of the creation in our universe; to know that even the most barren of planetoids can harbor the "elixir of life" is astounding and hopeful for me. I have believed for a long while that there must be life somewhere else in our universe considering how vast it is, and this new evidence provides me with more suspicion of possible other life forms. I wanted to share this curiosity and hunger of knowing more about what is out there with as many people around the globe as I can so that we do not feel alone in our endeavor to learn more.

Hackathon Journey

At first, it was overwhelming. All of the different challenges offered were far more than what I had expected for something that was not heavily marketed for the engineers at my campus, not to mention that many of the challenges involved skills such as coding that I have yet to develop. Once I had found my challenge that I knew I could complete, I felt much more confident in terms of being apart of such a wonderful opportunity. But as a creative thinker, I soon found myself unable to decide on a single idea for my challenge, however, I soon came the compromise of a poem; combining visual arts with music by creating a lyrical flow to generate unique images to each individual reader. By providing enough to support scientific thought but withholding enough to foster a curiosity, or wonder if you will, in those to continue the legacy of exploration.
