High-Level Project Summary

We plot data from the Delta-X mission in the Mississippi river and take our users on to a time travel through the solar system. We can learn a lot about our Earths climate from celestial bodies such as the Moon, Mars, Titan and Venus. See our final website here: https://outreach.conexresearch.com/

Detailed Project Description

We developed:





  • An educational platform, comparing different missions that analyse a range of celestial bodies and compare it to the Delta-X mission in the Mississippi river delta.


Benefits:





  • Pleople can learn, why space exploration is important in order to understand our climate better, and therefore can better predict droughts, floods and other extreme weather.


We use:





  • github for version control
  • bootstrap for CSS
  • D3.js for data visualisation
  • geojson for maps
  • Delta-X data
  • data from various sources for educational texts
  • adobe color for colour scheme design

Space Agency Data

  • We used data from the Delta-X mission.

Hackathon Journey

We learned :




  • more about the problems related to climate change around the Mississippi river delta. Furthermore, we learned about other planets and moons, and what similarities they have with our own climate, lakes and clouds
  • more about data visualisation with D3.js and geojson

Inspiration came from:




  • Data, that is similar to the one we want to obtain from our proposed Astraeus mission to Titan. We learned about the different sensors and data. Therefore we can understand the instruments we are proposing better.

Approach:




  • We participated online and were talking over Discord. We started with a website, added content and data visualisation.
  • We used Miro for collecting ideas.

Setbacks:




  • We had problems with geojson for a while, but youtube videos and blogposts helped with that.

Take Flight: Making the Most of NASA’s Airborne Data

NASA’s airborne campaigns collect high-resolution data to solve specific scientific problems, but these data can be used to study additional topics, especially when combined with other types of data. Your challenge is to create an app that will utilize the data from one of five selected airborne campaigns to educate the public about a problem associated with Earth’s changing climate.
