From River to Daily Life

High-Level Project Summary

By examining the data from Delta-x, the level of the river and the amount of sediment were correlated, and it was possible to make predictions about the near future with machine learning by using the old data. With these estimates, it is aimed to inform those who are engaged in occupations such as agriculture, trade, fishery and those living in the nearby region about possible situations and take precautions. As a result, an application design that will send a warning message to the relevant public in situations that may cause economic problems has been planned. Thus, the relevant people will be able to foresee the negative situations in the field they are interested in.

Detailed Project Description

The Delta – X mission was selected from among 5 airbone campaigns. Using the flow rate, level of sea, and sediment content data in Delta-X, it was aimed to design a machine-learning website that could predict how these data affect the creatures, settlements and agricultural crops in the Mississippi River Delta. This website aims to warn those who consume agricultural crops in the region, farmers, and those living in the area close to the River Delta, in possible dangerous situations, so that the public can take precautions beforehand and minimize the damage. It also makes specific suggestions to reduce the damage. While developing the idea, it was investigated what the amount of sediment in the river, level of sea, flow rate could cause. For example, sea level rise and overflow can adversely affect grain crops, agricultural activities, and areas close to the river delta. The increase in sediment can also adversely affect the transport of ships on the river.

Then, it was aimed to convey this information to the relevant public and to inform about how this information can affect daily life. For example, an increase in the level of sea affects farmers, those living next to the area. At the same time, since damage to grains and agricultural crops may occur, price increases may be observed in these products in the markets due to a decrease in quality or a decrease in quantity. The designed website aims to predict these events by using machine learning method and to warn the public about this issue via e-mail. Thus, while the people have learned in advance that there may be an increase in the price of grain products in case of flooding of the river, people living close to the region can take precautions in advance. The project can be developed by using the message way instead of mail at the next levels, if there is enough data, the project can be used for rivers and lakes in other parts of the world.

Hackathon Journey

We decided to participate in this competition by hearing from our friends. We aimed to improve ourselves by participating in this competition. After making the records, we started to research the data given to us by NASA and the challenge. We created the project scenario. According to this scenario, we started to create a website that will raise public awareness by using the data. Although our results were not very successful, we left here happy as we improved ourselves and had a different experience.
