Mississippi River Delta-What Data Tells?

High-Level Project Summary

Sea level rises threatening Deltas around the world but the Mississippi River Delta is losing land faster than all the others due to human activities such as mining and extraction of underground fluids: petroleum, natural gas, or groundwater. We've developed a web app that educates people about climate change and what are the reasons for it by utilizing data from NASA’S AIRBORNE Campaign. We have put an effort to make people understand the importance of the Mississippi River Delta which is home to many endangered species. It is important for people to know the impacts of human activities on our environment so that they can be aware and responsible and work together to fight against it.

Detailed Project Description

With the motto of making people aware of Earth's changing climate, we have made a web app using HTML, CSS, and JS.

Our project revolves around the Mississippi River Delta. By utilizing the data collected by NASA's Delta-X mission, we have made a single-page web app that shows how climate change has affected the Mississippi River. We have also studied the causes of huge landmass loss in the delta region.

Basically, our website tries to summarize the data collected in the Delta-X mission. Anyone who lands on our website will get to know about the Delta-X mission, the reasons for the growing and sinking of the landmass in different regions, and how climate change triggered these phenomena. For instance, we have given a timeline from starting of the Delta-X mission to its end. Anyone coming to our website can know a lot about the mission at a glance.

In the future, we hope to display all the data we have collected from NASA and various other sources dynamically using graphics and animations so that anyone visiting our website can easily understand all the complicated data collected by NASA. Furthermore, we are hoping to use Artificial Intelligence in order to predict possible areas where there is a probability of flood. We are also looking forward to finding various ways to slow down this huge landmass loss.

Space Agency Data

We have used the data from NASA's Delta-X mission. To be specific, we have used datasets from 2016 to 2022. First of all, we studied the data sets carefully. Then, we designed our web page accordingly. We then tried to summarize the findings of this mission and then we displayed them on our website.

Before this data, we were struggling to find anything related to the Mississippi River Delta. Though we found some information on Internet, we were unsure about how accurate they were. But, using this data, we were able to analyze the Delta more carefully.

Hackathon Journey

This hackathon was the first ever hackathon for both of us. Seriously, what a journey it has been. We have done many projects in the past but this experience was very different and unique. First, we have never worked in such a small time period. Picking a challenge, brainstorming, forming a team, working on code, working on slides, and finally writing about our project and all this within like 45 hours, was very challenging.

But at the same time, we learned how to cooperate with a team. We knew what it means to be in a team and what it means to work for a team for some common goal. It's like 11 pm and still, both of us are working as hard as we can to make our project better. Yet, we have enjoyed every single second of this journey. We got to know so many new things. For instance, we didn't even knew the meaning of "Delta" before but today, we did nice research and got to know so many new things that are happening on our earth.

At times, we got challenges. But, nevertheless, we did research and a lot of research and we always came up with some solution.

At last, We would like to thank the Nepal Astronomical Society for organizing this hackathon. We would also like to thank Suresh sir for his immense support and guidance throughout this journey.
