Geyser of Galaxies

High-Level Project Summary

We made a game that used images of galaxies taken by the James Webb telescope.

Detailed Project Description

As you travel around in our game, you visit various galaxies. You have to avoid flying rocks and debris. You'll see pictures of galaxies that are taken by the James Webb telescope, and you'll learn some fun facts about these galaxies.

We used the game engine Godot. Our code is written in gdscript. We also used gimp for some image processing, and we have a repository on github.

Currently our game has information on four galaxies. It could be expanded later by adding more galaxies.

You can play our game now. We have runnable executables for Windows, Mac, and Linux available at https://github.com/amitofsk/GeyserOfGalaxies/releases/tag/1.0.0 as well as source code on our github page.

Space Agency Data

Raw images of galaxies came from the James Webb telescope. Here's the link we used to download them https://mast.stsci.edu/portal/Mashup/Clients/Mast/Portal.html. We used gimp to then adjust the color levels and colorize the images.

We found images taken by the James Webb telescope of multiple galaxies. We used raw data and images of targets ngc 628, 7469, and1365.

Hackathon Journey

We had a great time at Space Apps! Everyone was so enthusiastic and it was great meeting other people who are also interested in astronomy and exploration of space data. Because our project was based on James Webb images, we learned how to download and process the raw images. We also got a chance to work with team mates from different disciplines and work together on making a game that others could enjoy and learn from. We would like to thank the organizers of the challenge.

We also used raw data from the James Webb telescope for some of the images. For these images we downloaded the data from https://mast.stsci.edu/portal/Mashup/Clients/Mast/Portal.html. We used gimp to then adjust the color levels and colorize the images.
