Cocola James - Know The Unknown

High-Level Project Summary

Cocola James is an interactive and educative mobile game that will help the audience of all ages to learn about the James Webb Space Telescope’s capabilities and functionalities. The player will get interactive documentation to gather knowledge and a game to implement this knowledge and will earn different types of rewards. Players will learn, and at the same time, they will make fun with all the missions. The player will have to pass three levels including JWST’s ‘Image Identification, Puzzle, Quiz’. Our application will spread knowledge about JWST and will build a community of space enthusiasts and bring a realistic experience to the community.

Detailed Project Description

Working procedure of our Game:

  • In the beginning, the Player will find himself in the control room of Cocola James. He can access the leaderboard, James Webb Store and NASA live telecast. He will find a launch button to dive deeper into the game.

  • After launching from the control room, the player can see a 3D model of the James Webb Telescope, which is fully interactive to show details of various parts of the model.

  • From here, the player will have two options. One for James Book and another for James Games. James Book is a repository of information provided by NASA’s Documentation, where James Games consist of interactive games built upon the details of these documents.

  • After completing each level of games or reading documents, the player will get different kinds of James as rewards and a level completion message. Further, the collected James can be used to redeem various endgame statuses.

  • After clearing all the levels, the user can collect their certificates and can share them on various platforms. It is a token of appreciation for being a part of the community.

James Leaderboard:

  • The leaderboard contains live leaderboard updates of the players, it encourages them to perform better to be an apex of the leaderboard.

James Store:

  • James Webb store is a collection of different space goodies, including space bags, space merchants, Space books, and accessories. Players can buy all of those goodies only by the James they got as a reward by reading documents and playing games, which will instigate the knowledge gathering of the player.

NASA Live:

NASA Live gives live feedback directly from NASA’s website, both video, and documentation. And also an embedded James Webb Telescope website will be there.

Space Agency Data

We used the data that NASA offers regarding the James Webb Telescope to generate the 3D model, the James Book, and the James Games.

Data obtained from NASA provided us with valuable information about James Webb Telescope’s capability and functionalities, how it takes pictures of objects millions of light years apart from us, and what’s the orbit with much other information.

We use this information to present it in the game in small capsules that appear at certain events so that the player does not feel an information overload and children do not get bored while playing.

Also, we collected some vital information from Canadian Space Agency and European Space Agency because they are also a contributor to the James Webb Telescope.

Hackathon Journey

This is the 1st time we have participated in this hackathon. So, it was a very exciting moment for us. After publishing the challenges our team was concerned about how James Webb Space Telescope works and can take a clear and crisp picture of objects millions of light years apart from us. But very few people show interest and have proper knowledge about this amazing technological wonder; mainly caused by traditional document-based education, this is why we are presenting a solution that will allow for an interactive and smoother way of educating people about the JWST. Our approach to developing this project was to do a brainstorming session, where everyone contributed ideas until we came up with the final one. It is great to have people with different backgrounds and skill sets on the team, as it allows us to solve the issues we faced more easily. In conclusion, our Space Apps experience was excellent, because collaboration leads to better solutions.

We would like to cordially thanks the organizer of the hackathon event.
