JWST World

High-Level Project Summary

The JWST world is a game application that will help space enthousiastes with different ages to learn about the james webb space telescope and it's capabilities. players advance into the game discovering challenges and leveling up to harder ones. JWST World importance manifest itself into encouraging learning and having fun at the same time.

Detailed Project Description

We are engineering students who are passionate about not only space, but also gaming. And with the latest images taken by the James web space telescope, we were amazed of how spectacular the accuracy and quality of images was. For that, a game we thought, would be perfect to show the jwst capabilities integrating learning with fun.

The abilities and mindset for innovation and creativity that gaming gave us, were not enough, we added to them, our programming experiences using html, css and java script. Also, using our set of skills in design and animation, to come up with a game combining learning with fun to show the JWST power and capabilities.

The game starts with presenting a guide, an astronaut, that gives notes after every important step of the way, instructions, encouragements, and even warnings if it necessary, sticking side by side with the player, checking his engagement in the learning process so that he not misses one single information. Then the challenges start by the first one which is the magic sentence, a game of cross words that complete a sentence related to JWST, which after submitting the answer directly a small cours about it will be shown. The second challenge consists of finishing a puzzle with a specific jwst image, which it gives after that detailed information about it. The third and last challenge is the let’s James it quiz, a challenge to make the player differentiate between telescopes, the jwst and the Hubble for example, all of that through questions and images to make the process of learning much easier.

Space Agency Data

In our project we used a lot of space agency data, for example pictures in the quiz game and informations given by our astronaut in the beginning of the game and after the resolution of each challenge.

Hackathon Journey

The NASA space apps challenge was one of the most incredible experiences we’ve ever lived. We learned a lot, challenged ourselves to push beyond what we thought were our limits. Working with strangers we’ve never met on a challenge we know nothing about except the fact that it said a “game” and we were passionate about gaming. And the approach we used was making it fun but learn at the same time, for the players, and our work environment too, help each other with what we could and being flexible and imaginative. Because we thought that a challenge is an opportunity for us to grow together, and individually too making all the work easy fun and efficient.
