WELCOME TO THE POINTE NOIRE KONGO NASA SPACE APPS CHALLENGE
October 1st-2nd, 2022 | In-Person Event
Pointe Noire, Congo
Please join us for the World's Largest Annual Space and Science Hackathon!
On October 1-2, 2022 NASA and a global group of space agency partners are inviting makers, builders, artists, coders, entrepreneurs, designers, and storytellers to participate in the 11th NASA International Space Apps Challenge. By using NASAβs free and open data and the space agency partnersβ data, Space Apps teams will solve challenges and work collaboratively to create scientific discoveries that can help improve life on Earth.
During a 2-day hackathon event, participants from around the world will create teams and use space-based data to develop solutions to challenges the world is facing on Earth and in space.
The 2022 hackathon theme is "Make Space" which celebrates that Space Apps is for anyone and everyone! Participants from around the world are welcomed regardless of background and experience to create, explore, learn, and build together. Through each yearβs Space Apps Challenge, Space Apps continues to support and empower ideas through innovation and inclusion.
This year Space Apps welcomes the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Mexican Space Agency (AEM) to the roster of space agency partners supporting the Space Apps Challenge, including the Australian Space Agency, Brazilian Space Agency (AEB), Canadian Space Agency (CSA), European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), National Space Activities Commission of Argentina (CONAE), National Space Science Agency (NSSA) of Bahrain, Paraguayan Space Agency (AEP), and the South African National Space Agency (SANSA).
Space Apps is managed by the Earth Science Division, Science Mission Directorate, at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC. It is organized in collaboration with Booz Allen Hamilton,SecondMuse, and Mindgrub, and the NASA Open Innovation Applied Sciences Program.
Who should participate in Space Apps?
Space Apps is for everyone! Including those who have never "hacked" before! All passionate problem solvers are encouraged to join - students, experts, engineers, makers, artists, and storytellers. While some challenges are technical, others ask you to use your artistic skills, business acumen, and historical imaginations!
In other words, you do not need to be a coder or data expert to be a part of Space Apps. The most diverse teams are often the most successful.
The Space Apps mission focuses on the following objectives:
- To inspire collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking
- To foster interest in Earth and Space science and exploration
- To raise awareness of NASA data around the world
- To encourage growth and diversity in the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, engineers, and artists.
Challenges
- NASA develops the challenges for each year's Space Apps event. Challenge teasers will be posted on spaceappschallenge.org about one month before the Space Apps event. The teasers will help participants know the challenges and skills they should consider when forming a team for that challenge.
- It's not just about smartphone applications! During the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, teams will utilize publicly available NASA data to design innovative solutions.
Solutions
- During the event, participants will organize into project teams focused on solving one of the specific challenges issued by NASA. Any project team that includes at least one participant and submits their project by the deadline makes that project eligible for awards at that participant's location.
- For a project to receive an award or be eligible for global judging, it must be submitted to the Space Apps Challenge website via a Project Page. The Project Page must include links to the original resources, such as a source code repository or hardware schematics. Solutions will only be accepted for judging if they are licensed under an Open Source License as determined by the Open Source Initiative: http://opensource.org/licenses/alphabetical.
