Please join us for the World's Largest Annual Space and Science Hackathon!

NASA is inviting coders, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, artists, and technologists to come together in this global hackathon. Over two days, participants worldwide will create in-person and virtual teams to solve challenges using NASA's open-source data.

Using actual data from Space, we challenge you to develop open-sourced solutions to difficulties currently faced on Earth and in Space. This year's event theme is Make SPACE, celebrating the motto "there's always space for one more."

Prizes will be awarded locally to the top three local teams. The winning team will enter the next round in the International competition.

Who should participate in Space Apps?

Space Apps is for everyone! Including those who have never "hacked" before! All passionate problem solvers are encouraged to join - students, experts, engineers, makers, artists, and storytellers. While some challenges are technical, others ask you to use your artistic skills, business acumen, and historical imaginations!

In other words, you do not need to be a coder or data expert to be a part of Space Apps. The most diverse teams are often the most successful.

The Space Apps mission focuses on the following objectives:

  • To inspire collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking
  • To foster interest in Earth and Space science and exploration
  • To raise awareness of NASA data around the world
  • To encourage growth and diversity in the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, engineers, and artists.

Challenges

  • It's not just about smartphone applications! During the NASA International Space Apps Challenge, teams will utilize publicly available NASA data to design innovative solutions.
  • NASA develops the challenges for each year's Space Apps event. The teasers help participants know the challenges and skills they should consider when forming a team for that challenge. The Challenge Teasers for this years Space Apps event can be found here.

Solutions

  • During the event, participants will organize into project teams focused on solving one of the specific challenges issued by NASA. Any project team that includes at least one participant and submits their project by the deadline makes that project eligible for awards at that participant's location.
  • For a project to receive an award or be eligible for global judging, it must be submitted to the Space Apps Challenge website via a Project Page. The Project Page must include links to the original resources, such as a source code repository or hardware schematics. Solutions will only be accepted for judging if they are licensed under an Open Source License as determined by the Open Source Initiative: http://opensource.org/licenses/alphabetical.
